Craft Fieldwork News
Under the direction of Judy Sacks of Gambier, craft program coordinator for the 1999 Cityfolk Festival, fieldwork was conducted by Fran Babic, Ricky Clark, Cindy Taylor, and Judy in fall and winter 1998-99. About 36 artists were documented, with a strong concentration in northeastern Ohio. Woodworking, textile arts, central European crafts, and eastern European crafts predominated. Many excellent craftspeople were recorded in this process, among them a remarkable community of Hungarian embroiderers, a group of innovative and masterful quilters, and a Ukrainian egg painter who ranks among the finest in the world. The 1999 Cityfolk Festivals "Ohio Craft Masters" craft program consisted largely (75%) of artists from the fieldwork.
During fall 1999 and winter 2000, quilt historian Ricky Clark of Oberlin is conducting fieldwork on Ohios rich quilting tradition on behalf of Cityfolk. Some of the artists Ricky is documenting will appear at the 2000 Cityfolk Festival. For more information, contact Ricky Clark or Cityfolk.
